Onions from seeds?
« on: March 13, 2009, 14:02 »
Hi

Is it too late to start off onions from seeds in modules?

I have recently come in to some very fine seeds courtesy of John's new book.

Thanks,

MM

Get them started now indoors and plant out when the weather and ground is better. They won't be as large as earlier started ones but they'll still be respectable. I'm just starting mine and they'll go out mid-April. We always get a nice crop.

I've found that the slightly smaller bulbs seem to store better than the monsters sown in January.  Plus (unless it's very expensive seed) you get so many in a packet that you can easily plant at a tighter spacing to make up your yield.  The only real drawback (unless you plan to show veg.) is that you have to peel more to get the same amount of food.

Thanks folks, I'll put them down tomorrow, might put the modules under a plastic propagator to help them catch up for a week or two.

If you sow in modules and have plenty of seed you could put 3 seeds in each and don't thin out.
Once planted out all three onions will grow and you will get a heavier crop than single plants although smaller onions.
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

3 or 4 seeds to a module works well. When you plant out space each module about 12 inches apart in the row. This effectively gives you the same number of plants as if they were planted single at 3 inches. They spread out in a similar way to shallots.
