Using my own compost
« on: March 31, 2009, 19:43 »
I have a compost bin full of nice compost based on last years veg scraps, grass cuttings, rabbit hutch clearings etc.

Is it safe to dig this into the beds for stuff I haven't planted yet - peas, beans and main crop spuds?

Thanks  :)

Hello Ian, Deffinately use it for your beans... I also use it under my courgettes/sweetcorn/pumkins/squashes etc., if you've got any left!

I've been spreading the contents of my compost bin on my veg plot & fishing roots out of it. I checked inside my bin to discover the bottom part of the inside of my bin has thin white roots stuck to the wall of it. I've fished out what I can but I'm now reluctant to spread any more of it, what d'you think?  :(

it might be either, potatoes or courgettes that have sprouted or
it could be a perennial weed that's sprouted (too). or seeds.
you always get little roots and stuff coming through in the compost but they usually dry out or get heated up so much that they die.

you'll probably need  to give it a good stir and throw some nettles or grass on it (no roots, though!).
just to heat it through.

i'm not sure whether it's okay to use like it is, but someone will come along that knows something soon and advise!
