Do rats Kill Chickens? I hadn't realised this, I thought they stole eggs and might kill young chicks.

Think we may have one under the hen house, I will take action soon as poss.

Thanks

Oh yes, most definitely. It started with mice. The chooks had killed the odd one or 2 and the others were left alone. I found tunnels under a cage I had in the coop with mum and chicks in. Next thing I know, I go out one morning and my lovely little silkie chick who was about 3 months old, was in a right mess, hardly recognisable. I couldnt beleive that mice could do so much damage. So I posted about it on here. I did as suggested and went and looked under the cage again and low and behold the mice were gone and there were great big holes and tunnels. B******* rats. I was also told that they would take out an adult chook given the chance. So as it was late I decided to go down the poison route the following day............fffffffffin rats killed another chook that night.
I put poison down the rat holes and then covered the holes back over with the cage.
 8) job done  they havent been back but I occasionally put poison down as soon as I see mouse poo.
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!!

I had an Old English Game hen who was a great mouser. She once stunned a family party into horrified silence with her party trick as she grabbed a mouse and clubbed it to death on the patio then called her babies round to eat it!

She's tried it twice - the first time, I saw her quickly dart over to the hedge: she emerged with a mouse in her beak, then she shook it around a bit, then dropped it, then tried to eat it whole but couldn't, so she ripped it in half and swallowed it.  Really gross!  The second time, Adam said "we probably shouldn't let her eat a mouse!" and so I tried to get it out of her mouth (it was already dead by this point) and ran after her - she just ran off, going "get off! it's my mouse, you can't have it!" so then Jessica (the big fat white one) started running after me, because she thought Erica had something really exciting to eat!!
