It's all manure today, isn't it?!
« on: February 23, 2009, 12:54 »
Ok, I could have hijacked another thread with this question, I guess, but...

I started my manure heap yesterday. It's not huge (maybe 3 or 4cu ft), but I want to leave it to rot down for six months or so...

I have read conflicting advice on whether it should be covered or not (it is covered on three sides, but not top and front); my instincts are telling me that, as this is quite a small heap, I should cover it to keep the heat up - is this right?

Yes - I believe so.
Covering also prevents the rain from leaching the nutrients out of the heap

I covered half of mine last year, it all composted very nicely even the uncovered bit.  the main disadvantage to the open bit was the waist high weeds!  Am hoping the composting process killed most remaining weed seeds or I'll be hoeing for ever!

Thanks chaps, I shall get it covered!

Also, how am I fixed mixing the odd layer of horse poo into my compost heap? It'll add nitrogen but will too much be harmfull (it's mostly kitchen waste compost)?
