I need to sow! and have a question about herbs
« on: February 23, 2009, 09:25 »
I am trying to hold back, and need to sow something.  Have figured a bit of herb and salad sowing in pots can do no harm.

I have Basil, Chives, Oregano, Parsley and Coriander.  I have a heated propagator (with my Aubergines and Peppers started in) and of course lots of pots that can have plastic bag cloches over them.

My question is,  as this may decide where i start them off, when the seedlings come through will i be potting them all into individual pots to grow on, or are some of the herbs better sown in clusters?  Like the way they are sold in the supermarkets.

Any other tips would be appreciated, as i am determined to have a much better herb selection this year, and if i'm successful i'd like to make a few herb baskets to give away as gifts through the summer.

Thanks in advance.
Liv.

I find the easy way to grow lots of different herbs is to put a pinch of seed into cell trays or small pots, leave until they are nice and full, then pop them out and transfer to  mixed final pots. For instance: if you use cell trays sow each row with a different herb and stick a label at the end. Keep compost just moist as herbs like it on the dry side. Hope this helps.
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

Coriander is one that I grow all clumped tgether....probably 'cos I use a big handful of seeds. It's a good idea to sow thickly when sowing outside....they benefit from this 'cos not so much moisture is lost on hot days. I would grow the others singularly....they grow better as a single plant!

Thank-you, both approaches interesting.  In my ever indecisive way, i'm going to try a little of both.
