sasso birds
« on: February 19, 2009, 16:26 »
Hi evryone,
we've been reading your site for a few months now, but decided to join in the fun today!!
Hope someone can advise us- Tom decided to give it a go with some meat birds, so we've had 10 Sasso birds for just over a week now, they're about 2 weeks old. Have just noticed today 1 bird has its right eye permanently closed. I'm sure this is new as we have them under a heat lamp in our garage and we're always in there looking at them!! It is eating/drinking/pooing ok, is plenty lively, but wondered if this is something to worry about??
Cheers, barbara.

Hi barbera (and tom). Welcome  :)

The only thing I can think to do is check if it's a bit gummed up and bathe it gently with some tepid water and cotton wool maybe.

They can cause themselves damage apparently (reading from book!) by scratching their eyes and worsening any problems.

Thanks, doesn't look sticky or anything, but will give it a go.  They are definately getting a bit more assertive with each other, i wonder if one of the others has pecked at it? will keep an ' eye' on it, pardon the pun!

Hmm curious (and hello by the way!). My only experience of closed chook eyes was accompanied by goo and bubbles, some kind of cold. Natural remedies suggest cool chamomile tea as a useful bather, although I wouldn't want to interfere with eyes too much. Could she have got something in it eg straw/ shavings, or perhaps it's been scratched. I'd try the vet if it isn't looking any better in a day or two  ::)
