Hi Ali. I notice that you are a graphic design student so I would try to concentrate on problems that may have a graphics solution rather than a biology solution.

That means scare tactics for pests really, mostly birds but also mice and possibly rats. The things I had in mind were cheap and reusable and portable scarecrow things that might look like a man, a snake, a cat, or whatever else scares the birds and other away.

Precisely Mr P.

thank you ice, you've just caused me to have a chuckle to myself at my desk  :D

I'm studying graphic design but as part of the course we're encouraged to take on all areas of design. So long as it has a visual out come its valid. That could be a design showing how I have solved a horticultural or biological problem or even raising awareness to them.

So far I'm just researching current suggestions which have all been great.

I want to here many problems that you may have, I have been reading through posts for other ideas. They don't even have to be problems with growing or pests but could be to do with the community of your allotments or the rules that are in place, to gardening at home, the mess that can be caused, anything.

As for heating a greenhouse ... More research here I come. What exactly the problem? Is it just keeping the heat during the cold weather?

I think it would be usefull if you were to explain more about your project aims.  After all, you are a graphic design student and not a horticultural one.  We could all make lots of suggestions, but most of those would be irrelevant. :tongue2:

So no cure for onion white rot then  :(

How about a method of heating a sectioned-off area in a greenhouse that anyone with a little DIY knowledge can make that isn't expensive (like electricity, paraffin or buying solar panels or underground heat harnessing). I have heard of using candles in cans - perhaps you could devise something on a larger scale? :)
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
