Chunky Chickens
« on: January 31, 2009, 18:12 »
My fat tubs of lard ( sorry ' The Grils' ) have now snapped the legs of their perch twice  ???  Either they're having a party in there late a night or I need to build something a little more robust now they're getting bigger.

Its free standing which I like as I can remove it for cleaning, its currently 2x1" in a sort of  'A'  frame arrangement. Their combined weight seems to be splaying the legs and pulling the screws.

Does anyone have a nice design I can steal ?  I don't think the girls are too impressed with the recent failures as they've started to sleep on the floor  >:(

Could you fasten holders for the 2"x1" directly onto the henhouse wall and still be able to lift them out to clean?

(or starvation diet for those girls ;))

Don't know if you can adapt this. I made 2 from scraps. Approx 60x40 studding on short lengths of 3x2, braced by bits of thin batten.

I plan to fix them to the walls at some point because they keep knocking them over, but they're certainly strong. ;)

Only the three girls - but they have got a little on the tubby side lately - probably my fault, I do throw them a handful of corn most times I open the back door.   ::) If i don't I end up chasing them around the house as they sneak in under my feet.

I've tried that sort of thing Rob but had the same problem with them knocking it over, I can't secure anything to the sides as one side is the door and the other panel I take off to clean them out (poor planning).

I think I'll have to do something properly instead of just screwing scrap together and asking them not to jump around on it  :D

I've got a similar layout. I've got to screw something on teh removable side that can hold the bars when it's in position.
They'll have ot lift out when the side is removed. Only other solution I can think of is to fix a free-stander to a piece of ply so it can't fall over ?
