Silicone v. Metal Cake Tins
« on: October 28, 2009, 12:04 »
Hi,

We are looking to buy new cake tins, 8" and on searching the internet, note that there are silicone and metal cake tins widely available.  We have never used silicone and I would be interested in your opinion of the pros and cons compared with the traditional metal ones.

I prefer silicone because a) they don't rust b) easy to turn out c) piece of cake to wash d) don't stick e) not as hot when they come out of the oven f) don't make so much racket if you drop 'em on the floor. It does require a leap of faith the first time but they do work well.

I saw some on a shopping channel last night, they looked fantastic.  Everything was turning out easily  even while still warm.  They made frozen things in them also and the silicone just peeled off.  I was well impressed.
If you go to the lakeland website they have a short video of them being used.

I was dubious too, so I tried the silicone cup cake cases from Lakeland.
Muffins popped out clean as a whistle, despite hubby saying it will never work you haven't greased them :tongue2:
I'm a convert now, and looking to buy something bigger.

I bought some silicone muffin moulds just because I couldn't believe they wouldn't melt in the oven!!
Have various cake/bread moulds now. Love them because of all the same reasons as catllar!

So far I only have the bun tin ones.  £2 for 12 from ASDA, but they are good, and when I can I'm going to get some different sorts.  I too was worried they would melt in the oven, but they don't and turn out really nice fairy and Queen cakes!!!

I like them for 8' tins, fairy cakes, muffins, but it doesn't work with loaf cakes, when I try to turn it out of a silicone mould, I have to break the cake to get it out. Strange.

Is it the corners on a loaf?  Everything else you use and others above are round ....  Anybody else got any theories?  Anyone used them for flapjack?

I've been wondering about these - but since it tends to be tea breads and things like that I make (fit well in buttie boxes  :D) - now ???   ???
