......having just organised to be able to collect unlimited supplies of what appears to be very well-rotted horse manure from a local stables, do I need to worry about it also containing straw from stalls etc, for general 'manuring' purposes, or will the straw help?

Straw is fine, better than woodchip. Do test it for pyralid before spreading it where you want to grow stuff this year though. (Basically try growing something in it in a pot. I'd post a link but I'm too tired to find it right now )

Thanks guys. I will try the pyralid test i think. Just wanted to make sure straw wasnt going to be a problem.
