My back boiler is leaking . . .
« on: January 29, 2009, 19:59 »
To be fair it's 50 years old. It's some sort of BAXI, with underfloor draught and a really big ash can. I've been burning all sorts on it this year (didn't use it last year), and it's really nice compared with the other (ordinary) fireplace (in the lounge) which draws cold air into the room. :o
I thought that I had found a supplier for a replacement boiler but on closer investigation they supply everything BUT the boiler.
The sweep recommended that I isolate the boiler and ventilate it and just use it as an open fire.  I'm not going to be able to save any money on water heating that way!

Now for the questions:
Does anyone know where (or if) I can get a replacement?
Failing that, is it true 1) that a woodburner with a back boiler has to have an efficiency rating of 90% to be legally installable?
2) That lining a chimney has to be done by a HETAS engineer?

I'm sure are more things I need to find out, but I'm so upset at the prospect of having to spend at least 3x what I originally thought on top of finding out that I need to rewire almost all the lights in the house, (and probably most of the ring mains too, but I daren't look, or even think too hard about it) that I can't think straight.
I had hoped ('til the sweep came) that the chimney might be already lined.

In short all helpful suggestions desperately needed please!  :|
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

A good metal fabricator/engineer should be able to make one up for you - it might cost though.  Have a chat with your local light engineering firm, they may know someone.

No, you don't need a HETAS engineer to to line a chimney, but you do need to have Building Control approval.

The advantage of HETAS engineer is that they can issue a compliance certificate themselves and that will satisfy BC.

Personally, I did it myself and saved at least 50%, including the cost of the woodburner.

Is it not repairable ?? can you get it welded, even cast iron can be welded with the right equipment. Or is that "not allowed" these days
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

You do want to check building regulations if you plan on changing or doing/having work done their are so many ways the government gets us to part with our cash. I believe you would pay a fee depending on the cost of works to be done (this can be expensive, you may also have to pay an inspection fee!).
Shame for you but we got rid of our parkray several years ago. However next door may be having theirs replaced so we may be able to aquire this for free for you. You would need to collect tho.

My mother has a woodburner that has a central heating adapter she does not use it.I think it was made in Switzerland. I think the builder got it second hand from from some building supplier.
