Help with trees needed
« on: January 14, 2009, 15:15 »
My neighbour has 2 very large White Beam trees in his front garden. The trunk is only 10 foot from my front window, and as you can imagine the branches overhang our house quite a bit. We are constantly getting bird poo on our car when its on the drive, and as the front of the house is north facing we get very little light at the best of times, my son has to have his bedroom light on all the time when playing in his bedroom, even in the summer
Enough is enough. Ive told him Im going to cut it  back but this is going to prove difficult as it over hangs his fence"sharp railings".
He is easily offended and the last thing I want to do is kill his trees.
When is the best time to cut them back? and can I just go for it or is their a special way of cutting them?
Then comes the waste, I have heard that by law I must give him all the cuttings to despose of? is this right? If so im sure HE wont see it like that more like me just me been funny! any ideas?
I may take my time.....but i'll get there in the end.

You have the right to cut back to your boundary, so  long as it does not damage the tree. That means do not remove to much.
Yes, there are special ways to cut/prune but hard to explain here.
Do not paint anything on the cut wounds!
Yes, the waste is his property, you should ask him if he wants it, if not it is yours to do with as you please.

Have you suggested sharing the cost of a tree surgeon to do the work?

If he is that much a pain in the backside and he is going to take offence whatever.
Just do it,if he complains tell him you will send him the bill.

...on the other hand, try to avoid a fight and legal battle.

There's a webiste HERE that deals with these sorts of issues, as well as boundary disputes, etc.

I don't know the actual law but penance's advice sound about right.

:D  :D Thank all, sound advice.
I will do the job myself, I have access to a scaffolding tower now, which should make the job a little safer.
Yes digger he his that much of a pain in the rear, you just cant please him. I know hes getting on a bit, but thats no excuse he just dosn't see the mess the same as anyone else would. This Christmas he put his third set of Christmas lights in the trees. The reason its the third set is that the other 2 sets are still up their as are this years still :x Fit enough to put them up, to old to take them down, more like to lazy.
I will get rid of the rubbish I think once ive spoke to him, for I fear if i give it him to get rid of it will be their for ever more.
:D Once again thanks for your help I know which way to go now. :D

Just a thought...

Would it be possible to ask your neighbour to come over to your house & show him how dark your son's room is (obviously making sure it's the dullest of days to add to the effect  ) .

Some people just don't realize unless they see it or themselves :)

Having said that you know your neighbour better than me :D

Take Care whilst cutting :D
