« on: January 09, 2009, 14:49 »
Hi thank you every one for your help so far, How do I pick up my chickens, im quite scared of them at the moment incase they peck me.

Also when I clip there wings some one told me That I had to put a spray on to stop infection, is this true???

Thanks every one Shelley x :?

Hi Lakisha

This is how I do mine :)
Easier to practice once they have gone to bed I would imagine they will be more subdued with it being dark :)

Then I just pop em under my arm, hold the hen against me with arm its under and use that free hand to extend the wing and clip with the other hand :)

If you clip them right you shouldn't need any spray. If you take too much off they will bleed which is when you may need to spray :?

Does that make sense :?

Sarah :D

A coupe fo our girls still try to flap about when I pick them up. If I go anywhere near with purple spray they run to the furthest corner

The other crouch ike good girls  :)

I found my new hens could fly today.  my ex farmer friend just lifted them by the legs held them upside down, they automaticly opend their wings and he trimmed one wing I asked why not both he said if you clip both they can still fly. just shows how much I dont know about keeping chucks But i am learning fast.

The reason you clip one wing is so they become unbalanced and can not fly and therefore should not be able to make any height but still could get out of harms way.

Never clip more than 2 inches off one wing.  It only needs re-clipping after the moult and re-growth of feathers.  The hens should still be able to fly up onto their fence or hen house though, so still watch out for escapees.
