how to grow in a greenhouse ?
« on: December 27, 2008, 13:40 »
Hi

Planning ahead for next season and I'm thinking about the best ways to grow the cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, chilli and aubergine in the greenhouse.I don't think I want a greenhouse border. I have seen theese buckets in wilkos for about £2-3 and I could drill some holes for drainage and fill them up with compost they would take less room than grow bags and there is much much more room for the roots. Do you think this would work ? Also are there any other methods ?

Thanks

Just remember to give the top part of the plant room to spread out - if you have them too close together, they'll compete for light and if they do not get enough air circulating between plants, there is an increased risk of disease and pests spreading across the whole lot in an extremely short time
Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.
Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.

Those buckets are 99p in B&Q I think, or get used flower buckets, ie the ones they display cut flowers in in supermarkets, 8 for 99p in Morrisons or FREE from some other shops.

Mine were grown in those this year and they did well.

I've used large plant pots for many years, (same idea), with no problems.

Having seen your greenhouse, I think you've got the space!!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

if you have a morrisons near by have a look by the flowers on the way in.. they do 'florist' buckets that could be used too ;) for smaller crops etc. then there is the way of stacking grow bags ;)

What plants would you put into the buckets garddwr?  Would all of the varieties that you have mentioned be ok in the buckets?

I'm using my greenouse for the first season and just planning on putting some staging in (from pallets) and working out where to grow what and in what!  Buckets look a good idea.  They are definitely in B&Q for 99p as I used a couple last year to grow some small potatoes.

I would suppose that all the things I mentioned would be ok and if not better than grow bags as there is much more space for roots.

Not the cheapest but very effective. Giant trays about 48" X 18" and about 3" deep filled with hydroleca (clay granules) and stand big pots (or buckets with holes in) on trays. Fresh john innes every year and the roots of the plant can grow out of the pots into the hydroleca. Water the trays and feed the soil. Reduces the water stress of just growing in pots.
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

I grow toms & chillis in those Morrisons flower buckets and for a quid you'll get over a dozen buckets of a similar size to a 12" plant pot.  However considerably cheaper, I just drill (carefully as the plasic is quite brittle) around 8 or so 3/4 inch holes in bottom and fill with cheap compost "Westlands general purpose".

Cheaper than grow bags.
