I ould say don't apply it if you don't need it. Do a PH test first. Have you  any reason to think your patch is too acid? It may well need it but often it is not.

Soil testing kits are available in B&Q for about £1.20 at the moment.

Lime does more than just alter the Ph. It will help release nutrients that are locked in soil making them available for the plants, it will also help to suppress clubroot if you have it and on heavy clay soils will help to break the clay down. My brassica bed gets a dressing in the Autumn then a sprinkle at transplanting, always make sure there is at least two years before your spuds go into a limed bed.
