Onion optimism?

I've just received a load of Sturon sets. The instructions say to plant them when the soil is workable. Would it be wildly optimistic to stick some in a raised bed straight away, possibly with a placcy cloche over the top? Or should I just hang fire until spring?

I'd be inclined to wait until spring, when the ground has warmed up, they won't do a lot until then anyway.

However, nothing ventured, as they say, even if you lose a few, you can soon get replacements from places like Wilkos for not a lot!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

They will probably bolt to seed if they do not rot. Wait until the ground is warm in April. Meantime keep them in a cool but frostfree place.

Fairy snuff.
I need to get the garden fettled in the next couple of weeks and thought that I could possibly have a small patch of it sorted and quietly ticking over until summer. Ho hum, I'll just have to be patient I guess...
Cheers both.  :)

If you can get hold of japanese sets you could plant them now. The sturons probs will do best going in later, but you could try a few just as an experiment.
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

I like Sturons. First thing I ever grew on my plot and I planted them on a mild February day.
