Disninfecting Chicken coop
« on: December 22, 2008, 10:01 »
Pls can anyone advise me on how to disinfect a chicken coop.  Am completely new to this, have just bought a second hand, wooden chicken coop and someone said I need to disinfect it.  What should I use to disinfect it with and is there anything in particular I need to know when I do it.  Many thanks in advance

Hello tina and welcome :)

Congratulations. If you have plenty of time to dry it and air it out, you can use jeyes fluid or similar which will kill off any viral or bacterial infections, but to get rid of red mites you may also need to use a product called Poultry Shield that dissolves the waxy coating that keeps them alive.

There is some useful advice HERE.

If you can dismantle it to clean, you will be able to get into the nooks and crannies where anything nasty might hide.

I appreciate your useful feedback... do you happen to know if there are any problems with pregnant women handling chickens or cleaning out chicken coops?

There was a debate on this recently as a members wife was recommended not to have contact with her chickens while pregnant (not by a member of the medical profession).

Think it is one of those things that is very low risk but you have to make up your own mind on and be sensible. There is a lot of scaremongering around pregnancy and you mustn't let it ruin a wonderful time with anxiety.

The debate is here (you may notice I have some strong views  )

Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.
