Is there anything I can plant now?
« on: December 10, 2008, 19:30 »
When I got my plot the boundary was replaced where it should have been after my plot neighbour had been encroaching for a couple of years. He was miffed and decided to take the top soil off of the area because he had dug it and manured it. This left me wth a rather deep trench about a metre wide.

Well, I had an email from the Commitee chairman who informed me that after a 'full and frank' discussion ( )  with the culprit he had agreed to replace my soil. Now. I have not been down there yet but this *should* mean that I now have an area of almost prepared soil, about 9m by 1m. So, is there anythng I can plant now to start growing stuff, or shall I have to curb my enthusiasm till spring?

Thanks in advance :D

I agree with Val, you may struggle to find some. Now is the time to think about fruit bushes for next year. You should be able to plant them from now until the spring unless the ground is frozen or sodden.

If you cant get any garlic cloves from tthe garden shop try some  from the super market, I've had success with that before.

Just picked up a nice large garlic from a small vegetable shop that appears to specialise in local (some organic) produce.

The selected item is just over 3ins across and cost 55p. Although I have garlic in already I still have space for a small row of 6-8 so it is getting separated and planted at the weekend.

If it come up then great, if not then it is just 55p.

So have a look at similar shops and possibly farm shops.

Something nice and prickly to keep the soil bandit  of my patch

Thanks for the garlic suggestions, I will keep a look out :D I might let that patch rest until spring. Hmm, will have to have a little think...
