Garlic dilema
« on: November 24, 2008, 18:05 »
Hello, have a slight garlic dilema. Having only just got round to getting to grips with my allotment i finally dug a bed over the weekend for the garlic, which I ordered the other day.
The garlic arrived today and re-reading the instructions I realised they needed full sun, not sure how I missed this before, which i was unsure if they would get in the new bed. Having only latly got the allotment I had not got round to checking where north was, so using google maps I had a look and realised they will not get much sun in these winter months. This leaves me with three options
1) dig another bed, in full sun, over next weekend and plant them then. This means I have to keep them somewhere for a week
2) plant them into pots to over winter and plant out in the spring in a newly dug bed. Not sure about how well they will do in pots.
3) Just stick them in and hope for the best  :D

Any advice would be more than welcome. Cheers

I'd go for option 3 - they're hardly going to get full sun in winter anyway!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I think that's what most folks do - but you've have to do it with confidence, so it looks like you know what to do!

The garlic won't be ready to harvest until summer anyway. right now the garlic buds are setting their roots. And, by spring, the light directions might change in your plot area so not to worry. Garlic will grow as long as there's soil and moisture.

The most thought I have put into where I plant mine is how easy I can reach them to pull them up next year.  :D

I cannot control the sun, the position of my house and where the little veg plot is fixed. It is all bung it in and hope. So far been fairly good. Especially with garlic. :tongue2:

Good idea of DD though: Do it with confidence, make it look as if you know what you are doing.

Try: They are planted in a little shade so they grow slower and develop a better and stronger flavour.

The inspiration came from my father in law, who when playing the piano, hit all the wrong notes with great conviction!
