will they lay?
« on: November 04, 2008, 16:54 »
I have a buff rock and a gold lace wyandot (spelling) are they likely to do much in the way of laying eggs? The buff rock laid a few before the darker nights but has stopped now the other one hasn't started yet...at the moment I have 10 hens and not one egg for weeks......think the big girls are too old and the little pekins too young!

Do ducks stop laying in winter? at the moment both still laying every day... although one does keep laying in water..is there a reason for this or is she just too lazy to move?

You are letting your ducks out too early in the morning. Ninety odd percent of ducks will lay their eggs before 10.00am  :D

Hi Violet

Are your birds moulting? I know a couple of mine are having a heavy moult and that has stopped egg production.
The winter nights might mean you don't get any eggs till spring off any young birds :?

I think it depends on the breed of duck as to whether they'll continue to lay over winter.

Sarah :D

Thanks for all that... one of them is moulting +++  Hmmm will keep the ducks away from the water first thing... One (of the ducks) has made herself a lovely nest right in the middle of a very large pampas grass and goes to lay there each day...... bit of an adventure getting into it to collect eggs but better than losing them in the water.

I hope next spring I am putting a post...help what do I do with all the eggs....

We are still getting 8-10 eggs a day from our older hybrids which are about 80 weeks old, and the 20 week old Amberlinks are beginning to lay, about 5 that I know of so far!

Egg production doubled !! :D

Had just 2 eggs a day for weeks now, fed chucks warm porridge 3 times last week when it was so cold, then on tuesday 3 eggs and yesterday 4 eggs!  At least 1 egg is from a POL at about 26 weeks. Not sure which hen all combs looking a lot redder this week.  So dont give up hope yet!  Maybe it was the READY BREAK!

I think I am encouraged... or is it jealous????? by your comments... the daft thing is that when they do lay they are mainly bantams so lots of little eggs!  The two black rocks who used to lay lovely big brown eggs are now< I think, Passed it...

But whatever they are lovely so let us see what the spring brings us...hmmmm Porridge...I wonder??????

The deal round here is you get the first box for free, and you don't get any more eggs till you bring at least one box back. I often have more boxes than eggs
