Eggs for Christmas
« on: December 13, 2008, 10:32 »
I'm planning my Christmas menu - have the folks over and all are excited about eating freshly laid eggs every day.  As I have a house full I need to make sure I have enough eggs for the four days.
Can you advise how long I can keep eggs for before they start going off?  I'm sure they hit the supermarket shelves a week+ after being laid but I just want to be sure of their shelf life.
Thanks :?

Hi blarney, eggs can be 2 weeks ld before they get to the shops, as we had a friend in the trade, and we have used eggs a month old that are fine!

But they say, 3 weeks from being laid generally.

To test if your eggs are okay, get a big glass or small bowl of cold water, and gently drop egg in it.  if it lays flat on the bottom, its very fresh, then as it gets older or starts going off, it gets more air in it, and started to stand up.  If it floats, DON'T USE IT!!!!

Thank you, I'm grateful for the advice.  I've donea quick sum and I think that I'll have enough if I start stockpiling them from next week.
