A woodpecker in disguise?
« on: October 21, 2008, 18:48 »
Hi, first post so be nice!

Just got 3 ex-batts this week who have transformed from chicken shaped bookends to lively egg machines in a week.

One of them has developed a habit of pecking at the wood of the coop, mostly in the same spot, I was just wondering if anyone had an explaination. She had been de-beaked, but you would hardly notice now. Is she slightly unhinged, or is she gaining something by doing this?

Don't have chickens so don't know but one day my ducks went mad pecking at the compost dalek. Turned out they were eating ants they had found there. Not any creepy crawlies lurking are there, that she is trying to get?

Welcome to the forum

Sure someone clever and chickeny will be along soon (or has already as I am the slowest typist in the world  )
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Hi spadefighter, welcome aboard.

I'm chickeny but not so clever. :?

They do peck at all sorts of things to try and make sense of them but it could be as Kate suggested and be eating something.
Is there a knot or some other blemish in the wood ?

They tend to concentrate on any spots or dots in my experience.

Thanks. Dont think there was anything to eat there, good idea though. As long as its not a sign of deep chickeny, unhappiness or a craving for something, I'm not too worried. I just hope shes not a sandwich short of a picnic!

I couldn't figure what mine were pecking at until I realised there was something printed on the run floor and they were pecking at the letters!  It sounded like morse code was being sent out :)

Isn't that part of the definition of a chicken?

P.s. Welcome to the forums! Did you name yourself after the 72 year old that was in the news recently?
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".
