Changing Nest sites
« on: October 19, 2008, 19:35 »
Evening all, yes another 2 questions from the Knight Family.....

We have allowed all our girls to free roam around the garden, which is realy great. All the 5 POL's and also the 3 ex batts are now happy. But (there is always one!) the ex batts have now decided that they want to lay not in the coop but in 3 individual places around the garden, which I'm been happ about.

1/ However when we go away for the weekend they wont have free range but instead have to stay in the large area we have for them. Now the issue is will the laying chickens  find a new site either in the coop or in the run?

2/ POL starts to lay just inside the coop door, which was a soft egg and broken, how should I train her (If i can figure out which girl!) that she needs to go into a nest box and not just drop it!

P.S. I have a Fake egg but not a clue what to do with it!!
P.S.S. Will never go back to shop bought eggs there horrible!!!! Chickens for life.
Graham = 2x Border collie Dogs, 2x Cats, 1x Wife, 2x Kids, 2x Hamsters and now 10x chickens.

Hi Graham

If they can't get to their usual laying place then yes they will find somewhere else to go.
As for the softy might just have popped out by suprise, I won't worry too much about that just yet. Try & find out which one has laid it :? and then keep an eye on her :D

....and the fake egg goes in the nest box and supposedly ecourages them to follow suit.

No idea how effective they are though.

And if the nest box is a little dark then they like that too, mine have a few bits of sacking hanging down like curtains

I don't know if I'm right to say but I think I've heard you shouldn't let them get the taste of eggs or they'll start pecking them.So I think you should clean it up once they lay by the door incase they eat it.
