Allotment waiting list
« on: October 16, 2008, 19:31 »
just thought i'd ask where i've got to on the list. Silly really as now i'm disheartened Am 15th  :( By the time i get one i hope the arthritis wont have got too bad) O well
Just have to carry on with the 3 small beds in the garden.
would have liked to try growing spuds but think they'll take up too much of the available space, n not really got room for more pots. (n cant do without big rows of runner beans.........i love em :tongue2: )
At least i have some room..........just not enough!!

Have you tried growing some spuds in big bags or container?  You won't get as many or as big, but is a solution.  Go for a 1st or 2nd early, or a salad crop instead of a maincrop variety.  Depending on the size of bag/container, just use 1 seed spud per pot.

If its any consolation, last september I was no. 15 on my allotment wait list but was offered a plot the following month.  this is the time of year when people tend to ive up plots if they are going to so you might find the list shrinks considerably over the next few weeks/months.

There's about 11 on my waiting list and the one at the top who has been waiting the longest hasn't even been on it a year yet so don't give up  :D

Apparently at our allotment meeting tonight (I didn't go - too embarrassed about my unruly plot!!) they had identified at least 5 people who had abandoned their plot or who had not bothered to keep it tidy!

These people will be eviceted and there are more that will get a 'talking to!'

Don't give up hope yet.. just keep in touch with the allotment officer to see what's happening!

Good luck  :D

Without knowing the size of your site, it's hard to know whether 15 is good or bad.

People I'm allocating plots to at present have been waiting 12 - 15 months, but they were number 50 - 60 on the list when they joined.

So it is all relative.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I'd have gone if I were you. Just to make sure they didn't count me as one of the 5. ;)
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

I'd already made my excuses  ..... but my Mum & Dad were at the meeting and gave me the low down on what went on.

I've grown 5 in a old dustbin for the last few years.  I punched some drainage holes about 2 inches up from the bottom, put a layer of gravel in the bottom and then added a 4" layer of compost/soil/etc.  Put the seed spuds in, another layer of compost/soil, earth up regularly until soil is about 4" below the top.

Yield isn't fantastic as Painted Lady says but it does allow you to have homegrown spuds.

I've got a Joy Larkhome book, "Vegetable Growing in Small Gardens" I think, which gives all sorts of tips for maximising small spaces, catch-cropping, successional growing etc.  Not sure its in print mind, I picked it up second hand.

I have also just checked to see where I am on the allotment list for my area, and I am number 95!!    :(

I've got to wait approximately 5 years!

Oh well, I'll just keep on with my little garden.

Why not do some  planting in local wasteground. Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall did an item about it on Thursday night. Some local councils even encourage it ! I think the only risk is having your crops nicked when they are ready to harvest.

Well, as alreadypointed out by Yorkie, it will depend. If you are 15 on a site that has near a hundred plots it's no worry.

If it were to have 10 plots however, then ...
