I'm ready to get a couple more point of lay hens, is this best left until the spring now though if they are not laying yet, as I have read that you don't get the best out of them through the first winter.

I always get ours now, they will lay for longer before moulting so over all will get more eggs.

I like my mid-summer and fall raised hens. About the time they get old enough to start to lay the light gets off and they don't lay till spring. That gives them an extra 90 or so days to fully mature so they don't get hurt passing the first eggs.

I'd get them now, too. Apart from potential health problems associated with coming into lay in the spring, you could actually get some eggs through the winter. I'm not sure of the exact best time (if there is one ;) ) but a friend of mine always leaves buying new POLs to this end of the season for the sake of winter eggs.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".
