Novice veg grower - advice please!
« on: September 25, 2008, 16:27 »
For the first time ever, I planted a few veg in a small plot (about 8') in my garden.  Grew peas, lettuce, sweetcorn etc as well as some herbs.  Most of the veg has obviously now finished, but the flat leafed parsley I planted has practically taken over the plot.  Has anyone any advice on how best to preserve it, i.e should I dry it or freeze it and if so, how?  Also, if I cut the plant back, will it survive until next year?

I also planted garlic (which is buried somewhere underneath the parsley!) - how do I know when it's ready and what do I do with it?

Sorry if these are silly questions, but very new to the whole veggie growing thing!!

hi ya! In the past i have picked my parsley, washed and dried it, then chopped it finely. Freeze it packed into ice cube trays. when frozen can be tipped out into freezer bag. i always found these little squares about the right amount to make a parsley sauce. Hope this helps

I just chuck some in a bag. Once frozen, you can break them with your fingers and use as much as you like.

They are rather cold hardy though. I leave my root parsley out in winter, they are in the green most of the time, they will run to seed come warmer weather of course.

Lucky you!  Flat leaf parsley is just gorgeous  :D   I find it hardy except for the Italian giant which sadly didn't overwinter up here in Derbs and has to be grown fresh each year. Well worth it though  :D
