Jerusalem artichokes, please help
« on: September 20, 2008, 11:29 »
This is my first year at growing veggies and a friend gave me some jerusalem artichokes, she said just plant them like you would potatos. So I did!! now I have these great humungus things right slap bang in the middle of the veggie patch. Will they always grow back?? Is there anyway to get them all out so that I plant them somewhere more permanent.

Not grown them myself but I hear they are better somewhere permenent as it is almost impossible to get every little bit out when you harvest and then they keep coming back so better to make a virture of a neccessity and have a permenent bed.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Yes and yes, they will grow back if you dont get all the tubers out, the good thing if they are left in there just pull them next year. I grow mine in their own bed, I have dug some boarding around the edge of the bed to stop them spreading.

Unfortunately they grow right across one of my beds, block out the light of everything the other side of it. I have definately learned that I have to read up about where to put things before just planting them.

I don't see how I can keep them where they are, so I am going to have to try and get all the bits of them up. I may leave that area next year, and when they start to come up dig them out before they can get a hold ( and hope that I get every last bit of them!!!)

Any other ideas??

Well we decided to dig up some of the artichokes as they were blocking out too much light and had them roasted with some potatoes for our tea. I know it is early in the season, but thought we would give it a go. Anyway, after all that, we didn't like them. I thought they tasted like melting plastic (not that I have tasted melting plastic, but the smell was the same). Our friends that were round for dinner enjoyed them though.

So we have decided to bring the whole lot up, this way I can light to the other hidden veggies, and hopefully not leave any bits left in the ground.
