Soft shell ?
« on: September 28, 2008, 19:02 »
Today while cleaning out the coop I found a egg shell I first thought it was a piece of plastic, having a good look  it was a shell.  All the eggs in the past have had hard shells.  Could this just be a one off.  They have grit & oyster shell they also have access to a large run.
What else can I do to prevent this. :?
Cheers all.
Geoff.

Have a read in the hen house as there are some threads on this very subject  :D  Oyster grit, natural yogurt, limestone flour, one drop of cod liver oil per bird per week on a crumb of bread, are all cures. You can get liquid calcium (Aunt Sal tells me) but that would be if nothing else worked and I'm sure it will.  I was giving my hens mixed grit but there was no oyster shell in it as far as I could see so I bought some Ostrea from the local pet shop (thanks Mick).  I do the other stuff too, and my my softie egg layer is now fine. It does make the girlie a bit off colour so it's a bit of a worry.
