Onion confusion!
« on: September 18, 2008, 10:36 »
I am totally confused and need advise
We grew mamoth onions from seed this spring and they are now in the veg patch. Some have now grown to normal size onions and some are smaller. We need to clear the veg patch and level the ground but are unclear if the onions are suposed to stay in the ground till next year or we pull them now.
If they have to stay in would it be possible to dig them up and move them?
We just havent got a clue and whats confused me more is Onion sets are being sold in the garden center to be put in the ground now
How green are we but it is our 1st year.

The Onion sets you see for sale now are Japanese over wintering types, as yours was sown this year, if you leave them in the ground until next year it is likely they will run to seed as onions are bi-annual. I would lift them when the leaves die off. Hopefully someone with more experience at growing mammoth onions will reply soon

Well if they are a fair size lift them slightly out of the ground with a
folk, To ripen them off and bend the tops over , I dout if you will get
any more swelling in the bulbs now .
Digging ,Growing ,& the sport of kings.

I will lift them at weekend. They are mostly normal size, just not the mammoth ones we saw on tv last year
What a lot of caring it took to grow them from seed, never again were down the onion set road in future.

If you plant seed late December and plant them in a well manured bed ,
You should get some big onions with a touch of luck .
