Nasty Iberian bugs - can anyone identify
« on: September 15, 2008, 22:29 »
Have just got back from Portugal, and after having a good old moan about the damage done by the cabbage white caterpillers to my brussels sprouts Pops told me to come and look at his brassicas. They were completely destroyed by thousands of yellow and red bugs. The yellows were about 8mm long and the reds about 16mm long. To make matters worse virtually every red was 'in congress' and visibly adding to his woes.

If anyone can identify them so that I can look them up I'd be most grateful.

They might both well be a shield bug of some sorts, the second one is quite common in Europe, first one is vague memory of seeing, I have to look it up what they are called in English, as I'm foreign.

Someone might help you out in the mean time.

Still looking for the yellow and black one!!  Nasty things!!!

Mind you, looking again it says they are black, red and yellow!

The yellow one is almost certainly a nymph of the red one. I've never seem this one before but for some years now I've had problems with the Southern Green Shield bug Nezara viridula which causes a lot of damage to runner bean plants, tomatos etc.

They translated as red cabbage bug?, even if slightly different, must be something closely related.

Donno, why that link does not work. :?

Anyhow, as Eristic says the yellow is probably its nymph and no other mystery bug.

Thanks for everyone's comments. Definitely Eurydema ornatum then. Dad will be pleased (!).

Now that I've got a name, followed up other people's links, and done Google searches I note that they have been seen in South Hampshire and Devon.

Great, I live in North Hants.

If they turn up in my back yard I'll see what the agro-chem boys can put in my arsenal.

Regards,

SS

PS Lincspoacher - I saw them at Dad's place in Portugal (before I left), not in the UK (on my return). Apologies if my original post didn't make this clear.

North Hants meaning the north of Hampshire (Hants) rather than Northants (Northamptonshire).

Apologies for confusion
