Sick chicken
« on: September 08, 2008, 19:05 »
Can somebody please help? I have a young white leghorn. Two days ago she went down and is still down. I have her separated from the others. She cannot stand. When I pick her up she kicks her feet but if I set her down on her feet she just topples over. She is laying on her side and pushes herself around some. She's eating a little and she's alert. Her eyes look normal. But she can't stand up. Her feet are shaking too. What's wrong with my chicken? Can anyone tell me, please?

Hi huskies. Welcome in.

A few questions to try and narrow it down.

When she went down, could she have injured her leg or foot at all ?

What colour is her comb ??

Has she laid recently ??

Does she feel hot under her wing, compared to the others ??

I've just copied the information from your other post to avoid any confusion.

She is certainly unwell.  Probably has a viral infection.  Keep her separated from the other birds.

Could it be Mareks disease    young bird and paralysis in the limbs ??
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

I read a little about Mareks but the symptoms don't seem exact. With Mareks there is paralysis and she can move her legs, she just can't stand. She pushes herself around but cannot erect herself. ??? So I don't think she's paralyzed. Please correct me if I'm wrong. In any case, should we just go ahead and wring her neck?

That's your choice Huskies.

Some keepers prefere to cull sick birds and some prefere to nurse them back to health.  You may want to see if she gets better or worse before deciding but I would definitly keep her separated from your other birds.
