Raised bed layout
« on: September 02, 2008, 10:18 »
I am just about ready (Once conservatory is re-built in the next couple of days) to layout my main veg plots for the winter and next year.

I have an area at the top of the garden, large enough for 4 raised beds of 16ft x 4ft ??? and still have a bit of room for a smaller raised bed for Artichokes and any other permanent stuff, also plenty of paths and a sitting area.

I also (Lucky me) already have another area on the go with some veg, Rhubarb/ Goosberry patch, newly rebuilt greenhouse and cold frames (With Kale/greens in them, they got built around the Kale etc).

Two of the beds will be East to West and two North South, can't fit them in any other way without major restructuring.

My main question is the width of the beds, does it matter if they are 4 ft or would 5ft do, I would prefer 4 ft for reaching over etc, but it seems a bit short when it comes to putting a row of cabbages in, would I be able to get three in or just two over a 4ft bed?

Any help appreciated.

By the way the timber is going to be 8 x 1 inch treated timber and comes in 4.8m (Just under 16ft).

I have just finished work on my allotment and decided on 8x4 beds. I knelt on the floor and measured my reach comfortably and decided that a 4 foot bed was just right (two foot to reach the middle). I can now comfortably work for both sides of my bed without hassle. I tried various measurements. Four foot worked for me!!
With regard to cabbages I put three in .

Cheers for that, I seem to remember I did 4 1/2 foot last time and thought I struggled more than I needed, so 4ft it is with three cabbages ;-)

EYG Don't be tempted. Mine are 4ft wide, and I got Three Cabbage rows in, but any wider, and It would be a real b*gger to get the Cabbage whites off in the middle. Believe me, and I'm 6ft tall!
