Hi, One of our Isa Browns has started to do a funny little squat when you approach her. She sort of hunches her shoulders, squats down and sort of freezes for a few seconds and then she's back to normal... Any idea's ? She's not scared or anything, in fact she's the friendliest one i have !

She ain't broody she has just come of age and is getting ready to lay :D

Broody is when they are sitting on eggs and wanting to hatch them :)

Eveyone was right  :D  :D  Went out at this morning at 06.00 to let them out and low and behold there staring at me was a perfect size egg, nice dark brown  :D I'm well chuffed, went running back upstairs to show the Mrs and then put it back so the kids can find it when they get up

Great news Stamford. :D  but I repeat the squatting behaviour does not mean that she's about to lay but rather that she's about to be laid. :D

I was shocked when my OH told me this, but it's true  :)

You are the big man as far as they're concerned and will submit to you.

Normally, 3 or 4 of ours will do this when I approach, but the top 2 just runaway.
Maybe they've heard the rumours

Well thats interesting Rob, there is one girl that refuses point blank to come anywhere near us, even if we go to them with mixed corn, the others will happilly eat from our hands but this timid one will eat whats left on the floor and the slightest movement towards her and she's away !

Sounds like she may be at the bottom of the pecking order. Maybe she thinks you're going to reprimand her. I still know very little abotu the pecking order and their behaviour. It would nice to find an article or a book about the hierarchy.
