Enlarged Crop ??
« on: August 29, 2008, 21:07 »
I am a bit concerned with one of my ex bats, the crop seems to cover her whole chest area and is very pliable.  Does anyone know if this is normal, if not how do I remedy it. :(

My ex batts and my ex bat ( only have one left thanks to Mr F) have always had larger crops than the others.  This is because you can see the skin as there are no feathers.  If the crop is still enlarged in the morning (when first out of the coop) then she may have compaction of the crop.  Let us know tomorrow.  Photos would also help as this is the law.

Hi,one of my chooks had a really big crop, which i was concerned about being abnormal.I was also told to wait until first thing in the morning to see if it has gone down.pick her up & feel it before she has her brekkie. When i felt my chooks crop it was almost empty, just a small amount left in it.That's quite normal for a chook to get a big crop towards the end of the day.But like roughleehandled says,if you are unsure, post a piccie. My chook does seem to get a fuller crop than the others, but she seems fine. One reason it could look so large is if she is skinny.Another reason could be that obviously she is now having a more varied diet than when she was a batt,& her body needs to get used to the new foods,or maybe she's just pigging out & being greedy!Don't hang her upside down until you're sure what's wrong with her,you could do more harm than good.Hope this helps. :D
