Our new allotment - acquired late summer last year -  is on heavy clay - some parts at a spit's depth it's desperately gloopy. Advice on improving this sorry plot will be gratefully received!

As far as the harvest goes, the potatoes have either rotted or been eaten by slugs - some slugs wave at us from the little holes they've made, others have been found co-habiting cosily right on the middle of the spud.  Our beans are stunted and waterlogged. We've had some nice broad beans and the borlotti and canneloni bean plants appear to be doing ok. We've had wonderful onions, decent carrots and delicious sugar snap peas. The leeks look as if they're settling in nicely.  We'll plant some more when we get home from our hols - we've decided.

I also have really heavy clay and have been gradually improving it by digging in loads of compost in raised beds which seems to be helping. Doesn't change the fact that the lawn floods when it chucks it down but can live with that :roll:

I'm sick of all this flipin rain ... can't get anything done on the plot  :evil:

French drains/Land drains can help but it's a lot of work.

Maybe try that in the realy bad bits and plenty of soil improver and organic matter in the rest.

Try some raised beds until it improves.

I'm waterlogged too, I've been up there today and despite it being lovely and sunny I couldn't do anything as the ground is totally waterlogged and just walking around I was half an inch deep in water  :evil: .

I'll just have to let it dry out and HOPE that the weather stays nice for a few days with NO MORE RAIN!!!!

Isn't it too late to plant leeks?  If not, I'm going to have a go too.

I can answer that one from personal experience. I was given some small leeks (blade of grass size) when i first started my allotment last September, and they eventually grew to about 1" thick. So I'd deffinately give them a go.

Planted leeks late summer last year and had a good crop - 2" thick and delicious. This is our second late planting/growing season here in the NE. We're willing to take pot luck!
