Too many seeds!!!!!!!!
« on: February 02, 2007, 21:48 »
I went on a bit of a spending spree with the seeds.  There are so many varietes of vegetables, and they all look so good. :!:

I have half an allotment, so I am going to have to be canny with the space I have.

I have already planted 4 rows of garlic, hmm do you think its a bit much ? I bought the garlic lovers pack from the Garlic Farm on the Isle of Wight - I did'nt really think how much room it would take, until I split the cloves and started planting.

I am having another go at carrots this year, I hope I get a better crop this year, instead of the poor showing and infested mess I got last year.  I have planted them in toilet rolls and they are currently sitting pretty on my windowsill - I planted them on tuesday, so it's probably wishfull thinking for anything to be showing yet (but that does not stop me looking!)

I think I am most looking forward to trying the many types of squash I have ordered , and the 4 types of courgette I now have.

I currently have on my windowsills:

Giant Onion
Carrot - Early Nantes 5
Carrot - Early Nantes 2
Rocket.

I will put on some tomatoes, cauliflower, broad beans "the sutton", and broad beans "violetta" at the weekend.

I hope my friend, who is building my cold frame, will come back soon and finish it off, as I am really starting to run out of windowsill space.

Did anyone else get over excited with the seed catalogues?

I haven't done the catalogues or the internet - yet, but I have bought most of the seeds in Wilco's and the flowery bulbs in the pound shop and I only have a small garden and small plot - oops.

I am going to send away for the £1.69 offer in the Kitchen Garden magazine. I think you get sprouts, radishes, braod beans, tomatoes and erm.. summat else that I can't remember

I bought some tomato seeds from Ryton last weekend. A pear one and a beef one. That is all I have at the moment.  Have a lot of clearing up to do before I can grow anything. Might start some off on the windowsils though.

99p shop - tomatoes and peppers. Not as if I haven't got any tomato and pepper seeds already of course. Can't have too much of a good thing.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

This must be my BIGGEST failing!  I ordered all my seeds as soon as the new Real Seeds catalogue came out in the autumn...

... and then thought I'd missed a few and put another order in....

..... and then had to wait for the children off the bus one day and so popped into the local garden centre......

NEXT YEAR I'll not buy ANYTHING NEW!

Maybe :!:

But it's just so much fun.... all that promise of goodies to come... :)

Most of mine are in date until next year.  If they go older i'll try and sow them anyway, wont hurt to try.  I'd just expect my succesful germinations to be lower with each subsequent year

If they're no good i'll know better for next time.

If they can grow a 400 year old seed in kew i'm sure some will come good.

And also, some seeds last for a few years, so save them for next year and the year after, and the year after!!!!  My Veggie book has the time in it that all the seeds should last.  Apart from parsnips poor little things.  Thye reckon they only last one year, but there is no way I could have plants all the seeds in the packet I bought last year, so I will try them this year anyway,  like jimbo says, plant them anyway, even if only a few come through, its better than just chucking away what might grow,

its not the parsnip seed that rots its the blotting paper/glue that they are coated in.is this the same stuff that form the clusters of beetroot seed :?
