Think you're right Trillium. When I took over the plot mid season last year it did get a bit waterlogged as its on a bit of a slope but i thought it was just the fact it had not been cultivated for some years and was rock hard and thick with couch. I am going to make a raised area further up as suggested - next door plot had fantatsic onions  and hers are on a raised area - still as always there's next year - I'll get the hang of this growing lark one day

I've got my onions drying in the garage on newspaper.  Looked at them tonight and I think I should have had them on some sort of mesh or slatted surface as the tops of the stalks have gone all squishy and some are a bit furry.  Pulled all the squishy stuff off and spread them out more.  Do you think they will be alright ?

They should recover, but try to get them on some screening or hang them on a line with pegs. It's air they need to get the papery covery which is what keeps them.

DD. - it is early but with all this wet weather my tops were suffering badly with mildew.

Had to lift all my onions (they were starting to ripen anyway) as the tops were covered in mildew - had this problem last year but put them upside down through large mesh fencing and hung up like a hammock in the outhouse. They dried and stored well, so have done the same this year (fingers crossed).

I found that even thick necked ones dried out and stored OK. I think that having the tops hanging down helps a lot.
