Don't forget to put a stonking great padlock on the door. Hens are worth pinching these days apparently.  :?

Nice mullein in the paddling pool btw !  :)

One other point (from experience). Make sure all the mesh is secured to the posts well and truly. When we first had the chooks, the dog ran at the run and panicked the girls, who flew suddenly into a corner and the mesh detached itself from the post

I had to nail battens over the edges to secure it instead of the heavy duty staples which weren't quite up to the job. Also makes it harder for any foxes (or people) to prise it open.

thanks for that rob , we are thinking of doing that but it will be done bit by bit am afraid.

i have had the dogs locked in there today with me while i was working i dont think they were to impressed well thats until they found an old bone in the compost pile   .

the door still needs to be wrapped in small wire as i used a old metal bed frame that i rescued from the rubbish dump the other month, i did have peas growing up it but they did not survive to well so i pulled them up .

14 hens , i would do more but i dont have much money to give the centre as much as i would like to .. appartently most ppl give them £5 a bird which i think is kinda ok but i hope they will except £50  for the 14 birds .

i have built at least 90%  of this run on my own so yeh i am proud of it ,,, my dad has been pretty gutted as he's been dying to help but as hes disabled now he cant do much and i did have to call on 6 ppl to help put up the roof .
 there is one thing i have never handled a hen before so saturday should be really fun   :?  :? . but do i really have to put them in the coop rite away an keep them in there for so long , i just want to pick my girls up ealry if i can and then just let them loose for the day would that be right or wrong to do. :?:

when i went to a rescue day at the battery hen welfare trust i can't say i saw anyone making a donation, though i was only there for  30 minutes. i think the 4 or 5 pounds per bird is what the bhwt would love but is not set in stone. i donated £20 for 6 birds and it went down very well so i wouldn't worry about the suggested donation amount. if you're strapped for cash i'm sure they'd not even ask for anything, after all you their main concern is  finding homes for rescued birds.

what place are you getting your ex-batts from Karlooben?

I understand it's a donation to the charity, but the two places I've heard of ask for a minimum of £1 a bird.  Although, of course more is gratefully received as the costs go to the hiring of vans/trailers and the like, not the rescuers as that's voluntary.

Wow!!! That place is far too good for chickens! And you even have a pond already for ducks
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.
