Rotting Swedes!
« on: August 14, 2008, 10:22 »
Anyone any ideas on why my swede are rotting.

I have planted out some Swede Angela and they have grown really well (2 of them are the size of footballs!) however recently I have noticed that they have split and are rotting with a greyish slime in the middle of the split. The leaves look ok as do the roots.

Is there something in the soil that I need to get rid of.

I have only just taken over the allotment - it was unused for a number of years.

Any ideas gratefully received

Not an expert (never grown swedes) but could this be boron deficiency. There was something about this the other day.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Lack of water followed by LOTS of water makes them split.

Boron deficiency causes brown centres (not rotten though).

Thanks for your replies.

Once its happened is there anything that can be done to save them or is it a case of the big bin!!
