Life cycle of the cabbage white butterfly

I am trying really hard to keep on top of eggs on brassiccas at the moment and now the caterpillars are invading too.
How long before the egg hatches?
How long before caterpillar turns to butterfly?
Where do cabbage whites go when they are not invading my garden? And dont say into yours ha ha
What good do these little blighters do except feed birds?
Thanks

i dont know when or where cabb white b,flies come from or where they go too ,

what i do is take cheap plastic tennis rackets and leave around my plot, i have 6 , then when the little darlings flutter near my greens and brassicas i give them a volley, smash or serve them into the middle of next week, or to be really mean i pull their wings off and place them on one of the many spiders webs around my plot ,

HA HA HA -- HA HA HA -- HA HA HA

I have a trough of Radishes with not one leaf left on any of them.  Didn't think to net them.

I also net mine so no problems with caterpillars, but whitefly, don't talk to me about whitefly, if you brush against the brassicas it is like it is snowing!

I did that (with 'butterfly net' from garden centre). It isn't butterfly net. They can still get in    They do it in front of me. I bet they are laughing at me too.
