I added loads of compost and dug. A lot.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Hello Digalotty and Welcome  :D
I have only had my plot for one season and I like many others have heavy clay soil and it takes a while to improve it.
Digging in compost will help, also manure (read the section at the top of this page about `Persistant Herbicide in Manure` ) so that you are aware of problems being dealt with nationally and how to deal with it. Sharp sand and grit are good at helping breaking down the soil - but you will need a bag or two for each section - probably cheaper to buy in bulk.
I found for this my first year that planting potatoes really has made a difference to the construction of this soil; so although it will not happen overrnight; improvement is achievable.  Has`nt help that we have had another wet spring and summer (so far) so everything sticks to your tools.

Bye the way where are you from?  You may have a rain free environment - if so lucky you.
Everyday is the dawn of a new error...

Get chickens - add poo, wood shavings, straw & possibly bark shavings to the ground and it'll soon go from clay clumps to fine tilth.

I once had a garden with heavy clay soil. It was hard to work, but I wish I still had it. It was far more fertile than anything since, because no nutrients were leached out.
