hi there everyone,
love this forum found so much info in 1 place.

i'm getting some chickens and hopefully a cock soon potentialy want to have my own chicks with the help of my girls, but mainly for eggs.
 :oops: my question is......

can a cockerel mate his offspring when they're old enough to produce more chicks.

Hi. If it moves the cockerel will have 'em!!! It would be better if you had a cockerel that is far removed from the offspring....makes for a healthier bloodline. Smacks a bit of 'Deliverance' !!! ;)

Hi there!
Probably best to mate with new blood unless you are serious about breeding type,colour etc. then would breed a cockerel to close family which is called "line breeding" but wouldn't mate brother to sister or father to daughter. For example I have a very good hen (Audrey)and cockerel(Bigfoot) who are brother and sister -but have added a new unrelated hen to the cockrel (Bigfoot)and will mate the offspring (young cockrel called Sassquatch son of Bigfoot) back to the hen(Audrey)
Does that make sense? :lol:
