The Big Dig
« on: August 04, 2008, 07:24 »
Does anyone know where to get hold of a DVD of The Big Dig which was on the BBC on Sunday mornings back in 2006.  We had just got our plot and were not able to watch as we were hard at work clearing the jungle.  I have tried the BBC, but they don't have any DVDs of it.

If however anyone saw it and thought it was not that good, please let me know as it will make me feel a lot better.

Thanks for your help.  Keep bringing the produce home, it is so exciting. :D

I missed it too. Well I say missed it, they pulled the plug after a few episodes. I think they must have got complaints from viewers of Cash in the Attic and Flog it    so it was scrapped

I think they put it out on UKTV gardening but I don't have that so I gave up on it.

If you want a lotty DVD then you can borrow a copy of The Allotment which is excellent (well I love it  :D ) and it's doing the rounds on here.
There's a sticky for it

I watched it on UKTV 2nd time around and while it was interesting seeing different plots ideas etc I got a little bored with it in the end to be honest

I think Simon Mayo was a bit flat as he had no real enthusiasm and it showed

I think that was just Simon Mayo being "normal"!  I must admit that I did enjoy it, whilst I am not sure that I learnt much it was good to have an allotment programme on TV, albeit viewing via SKY in the end.  At least they didn't rotavate mares tail into their plot - having said that they didn't have any!

Yes you're probably right. He never really did enthuse on radio did he  :D

I enjoyed it while it lasted and like you I thank goodness for anything allotment related. Shame it had to finish just as it got going.

Only got to see a few odd bits as I work every other weekend, so can't comment on how programme was overall, but this show was instrumental in us stopping talking about getting a lottie and actually doing something positive about it. Found it very inspirational and it showed that it was something you could do even if you had little or no knowledge, you just needed to have enthusiasm, willingness to work & learn and your heart in the right place. Just remember seeing peolpe from all walks of life with a common interest & goal.

Thanks for the replies.  Sounds as though I havn't missed much, but I love everything to do with veg growing and allotments. Someone said Terry Walton was in that that programme and I loved his book so thought that would be good also.

Have got the DVD on allotments (the one with 15 half hour slots in it).  Watch that in the winter when we come back from the plot just as dark is falling.

The Terry Walton & co links were very good I thought. The guy has a lovely lilting voice so is very easy to listen to. He knows his onions too :D

The Allotment DVD has some great tips in it, and because it's in small sections, it's easy just to watch one or two as you have time. I watch it to remind me what I should be doing and when  :D

Have you got the exact title of this DVD to hand, CQ?
I've not heard of it, and Amazon isn't being helpful.
Agreed re Terry Walton, could listen to him all day. He should have his own TV show of Tales From Terry's Allotment, never mind a monthly podcast/radio show

there is a copy doing the rounds on here which you may borrow

See Chatting on the Plot - The Allotment DVD  :D

If you'd like your own copy it was made by ITV and you can get it from Wildfire Productions at http://www.allotment.info/

It's a bit quirky as they are real people but well worth the money.  You can watch it any time you like as it's in very small chunks  :D
