Let them eat..... Bran?
« on: July 31, 2008, 22:12 »
I've read that Bran is great control for slugs - apparently they love it... but it swells up inside them and kills them - they also don't like to cross it, so you can protect your delicate seedlings / lettuces etc with a ring of it. It also acts as a mulch.  :D

Sounds fantastic to me - or is it too good to be true?  :?

Has anyone tried using bran?

Cheers

It probably would swell up inside slugs.  It didn't make me feel very well when I ate some recently.   :? I read that it acts as an accelerator in compost heaps so that's where mine ended up.  I suppose it would make a good mulch as well.
We can be sad that rose bushes have thorns, or glad that thorn bushes have roses.

hiya fatgaz my neighbour uses bran very successfully swells the little * up and stops them dead, but you have to keep putting it down cause it gets wet or blows away, she buys hers in 25 kg sacks from a animal feed mill dead cheap that way

someone told me bran makes them explode!!!

she suggested putting it inside a loo roll - wondering if a bit of pipe would do the trick and keep it dry if placed around the plants

may have to give it a go - think i have some albran mouldering away at back of cupboard!!
