One obvious question I forgot to ask...Can I telly by general appearance if a duck is a he or a she? or do I have to go rummaging around in feathers and if so is it obvious?

The drake has a feather curl at the end of the tail. No need to go rummaging unless you really want to .

Thank you for all your information... just spoken to someone else who keeps quite a lot of ducks...all girls...and he assures me they are "always at it"  So that's all right then.!

I'll find something else to worry about....for example will the Yorkshire puddings be as nice with duck eggs?

Think 2 eggs is a pretty good indication that they are probably both girls although voice and no curly tail feathers are also signs.
Agree that duck eggs are definately the best!
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.
