going to fur and feather auction tomorrow
« on: July 21, 2008, 21:28 »
if i get up in time lol.

we have just got back today from a weekend away, me n dh went to blackpool for the darts and kids went seaside on east coast with my aunt n uncle so were pretty tired lol.
Fur and feather auction is on tomorrow at Melton Mowbray we need to leave bout 9ish at latest if were going. I'm excited at the thought, last time we went we just looked but DH has agreed to let me take a box or two just in case   i see a few chooks that i like. He would love more brahmas as would I but not many round this way. Theres just so many diff chooks breeds that im in love with.
If I  do buy  and get too many it will give the the urge to finish of the house i started to build before mr fox came munch muching my chooks lol. ( i was running out of house room b4)
has anyone here bought from auctions before? and got some words of wisdom??
I know to look at them well before bidding and not to pay too much, I have a fair idea of hen prices round here.
thanks Jeanette

Hi jeanette, I know you'll be there by now but don't be surprised if prices are on the high side as the school hols have just started. my dad will be there and he reckons some of the prices people pay for "cuties" ie a broody and chicks, are v. high at this time a year. But whatever the prices you'll have a fine day out and its always worth walking the short distance to the melton town street market - don't forget the pork pie!

I know someone who breeds them -will see if she has a pullet spare for you they are based near Kent somewhere tho, I am  hopefully getting a few in a couple of weeks. Could you take a cockerel? Small hobbyists prefer if you take a pair or trio -I will ask anyway

Hi  all
well what a day! IM totally worn out now but  have had a good day really.
I wanted silkies and or polands really and nearly had some lol but the prices went too high!  there was some what looked like brahmas to  me but sold as cochins...... i bidded on those but dropped out at just under £15 for 6........ wish i had gone 1 more  really lol. dropped out of lots of auctions on the silkies n polands at around the £15 to £20 mark pairs n trios.
anyway DD no2 loved this mum just a bog standard hybred with 5 babies so guess what...yup i bought them lol hehehhee all now safely in there house and settling in well. Was a mre getting them out of the cage tho as it was 6foot  up! and some silly man thought i was struggling to get them out and *helped* by moving my bodily out of the way and getting mum out before the chicks. So then of course the chicks did their nut wanting mum  and 1 chick jumoped right out and lwent runnign round like a .well ok like a headless chicken lol     so i had to chase it  somewhere safe from big feet and the RSPCA officer was trying to help catch it too   Well caught it was by a quick little boy   and so we came home very happy.
I know a few of you have said you wouldnt buy from auctions, and there was some ill looking hens, mainly flicking heads about like they had mites and a pair of buff orps.... OMG the hen didnt move from under the cock (who had a small injury to his comb at the base) and they must have both been well over 2 yrs old and yet they still fetched silly money. so nope i didnt buy them
Snyway enuff waffling heres the pic more will foloow when i get them uploaded. Mum wasnt happy when we fisrt got them and pecked me a few times so they aint been handled uch but once in the house with food and water and a comfy bed the pecking stooped. At a guess the chicks are 2 to 3 weeks or so old.
Jeanette
PS DH went and got th sausages form D&M and a lovely piece of stilton for me  yummy, i got a big colli  for 60p so teas sorted lol.

pps will de louse them later just incase
