pumpkin growing. support or run free?
« on: July 22, 2008, 15:33 »
I rashly sowed 5 pumpkins across my 8ft wide bed and they've gone mental....all have got pumpkins growing but, of course, the leaves have stretched out and are encroaching on the other items further up my bed. I don't mind them bundling on one another, but I don't want them stealing light from my other veggies. So, I was wondering if there's any sort of support i could use at this fairly late stage, to prevent this encroachment, or am i better off just tying the stems back? Or can I trim back the worst leaves?

I'm a complete newbie on a steep learning curve and loving every minute of it. Any advice gratefully appreciated.

Nic

Growing upwards can be tedious, depending on sizer of plant and fruit, which would need individual support.

You can just throw them back in bed or prune, which I find to be necessary to limit fruit numbers for good ripening on our summers anyway. Cut behind a leaf after a fruit.
