bulying hens
« on: July 15, 2008, 16:45 »
One of my hens was injured and needed stitches. She spent one night in the house and then returned to the run. Now the other hens are bullying her and I dont know whether to leave her to get on with it or move her. Any suggestions?

Are they pecking at the wound?  If so, purple spray may stop them.  Perhaps you may have to seperate her in view of the others until she is better. Good Luck

I read on a post the other day about a chicken that was pecked/injured,so they seperated her,she got better, put her back in with the others & they pecked her on her back right down to the bone.It was obviously very upsetting for the owner. So they had to seperate her again as I don't think the owner thought the chicken would be accepted back in to the flock. So they had to house her seperately & said they would have to buy some more chickens so  she would have some friends to keep her company.I think this is why when you seperate them you have to keep them in sight/smell from each other,so they are more likely to be accepted back.Having said all that i'm no expert,so it will be interesting to see what everyone else thinks,i could be wrong!

I think sometimes everything fails and they end up being housed separately but they have runs which are alongside the others so they are with other hens but can't get pecked or attacked. Means more cost though for the extra house and run
