New to forum and veg growing - some questions!
« on: July 14, 2008, 10:46 »
Hi, I have just joined the forum and have started growing my own veg this year.

I have got cabbage, purple broccoli, carrots, toms, potatoes and shortly some garlic, and have a few questions that I hope someone can answer!

My cabbage is a bit overcrowded and I am thinking about trimming off some of the large leaves – are they edible? I planted them in the last week of May.

There are some large outer leaves on my broccoli, can these be eaten?

Finally, I live in a city and have found nettles (for soup etc) to be poor quality and not as tasty as countryside ones. Is there any way of cultivating a patch in my garden which is completely bare of nettles and always has been?

Many thanks in advance!

I'm *pretty sure* you can eat the cabbage leaves ... but if you end up in A & E then don't quote me

You can definitely eat the broccoli leaves, we had some for tea the other night and they tasted great :D

The only thing I know about nettles is the fact that I hate meeting them accidentally

You could definitely plant and cultivate a patch of nettles!...many do to encourage butterflies and bees! :)

Thanks agapanthus, do nettles have seeds or is it best to dig up existing plants?

No problem eating the large cabbage leaves - but they take a bit of cooking!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I was wondering if they are too young to be eaten or perhaps they will not taste as nice. But I am more than happy to take the advice of those more experienced on the forum!

i have got a small garden and have dug up a nettle from the nearby hedgerow, not a private one, and planted it in a pot and put it near a buddelia. hopefully and butterflies will go there and NOT on other plants
