Piggin' Nettle Army
« on: July 13, 2008, 18:53 »
Well, i never thought I would "bump" into a nettle taller than myself, although 5ft hign does not count as being tall these days  (thats me not the nettle).........bloomin' 6 foot nettles are ......even bigger in some places. Im now after having  a nice rest-  going  back out to face the dreaded Nettle army again, I swear to goodness they lay in wait, just when you think its safe to grab that juicy raspberyy WHACK the beggers are hiding out pretending to be part of the raspberry bush, or they just try to tickle you from under the redcurrants, both lots of bushes are way out of hand and im covered in nettle stings and not a dock to be found, unless Im lookngin the wrong place!

My newly aquired plot is about 20 x 30ft as a guess and for the past two weeks have been battling with the nettles and weeds, rose trees and raspberries, there wasnt even a path visible when i started work on it, my granddaughter "hacked" her way to the back of the plot in a straight line to see if the back was the same as thr front....well duh !!! Pretty much the whole of the stuff we have cut donw between us has been done with a pair of secataurs -  sharing them that is... lol...Ive been on there today since 11.00am its now 6.30 and im sat here with a well deserved cuppa and the first day i havent got soaked to the skin....
Im lucky realy as the plot ive been after for for four years is rioght in front of my own front door !! So i can leg it when the rain gets too much.
Also i suffer from bad arthritus so i can only do about half hour then have to stop for a while, byt I am getting there, i wishi could give away these raspberry plants and redcurrants there are so many! what a waste to put them in compost, but they havent been touched for at least four years so they are not growing too well anyways they need chopping down and starting all over again I think.
Just thought id have a blag while having me cuppa.
Ive brought some leves in for plants that i havent a clue what theyare and I shall go into the net tonight to see what I have growing !!!
Parden me spelling but i have come upstairs to the pc without the goggles and im not going down again till I am going out the door to do battle again.
off to check me fruit cooking ........

thats a LOT of work! You enjoy that cuppa Oz, you sure deserve it!

Nettles are a begger arent they? I went up to plot today ..first time in three weeks, and even the tiny ones got me

Be careful, and take it easy...
and how lucky are you that its so near? I wish mine was, but its a ten minute drive away :-(
Still beggars cant be choosers, and I love my plot 41   :D

Hi Ozwytch.

have you got a compost heap going ?

I saw nettles as a pain until I got my heap, and now I love ripping them up and feeding them to the compost monster !
The more they grow, the hotter my heap gets. There's a positive for every negative. Just depends how you play it.  :D

They don't like them live and growing, but maybe if they are cut and wilted a bit . . .  don't know, haven't actually tried them on mine (chickens that is), plenty of fat hen for them still. ;)
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

Apparently Aggy's chickens like nettles but not sure if it's a common thing.

They definitely like slugs  :D

:o
many thanks Paula and Rob.
Nope, no compost heap yet - jsut cutting eveything down to floor level not even digging up the roots yet -  i need to see where paths are and exacly what it is thats planted there -  i found an appletree !!!!
The previous chappie dub and built up what looks to be cold frame its quite deep about 6 housebricks size i think -  but its made with breeze blocks, wondered if i couldn use it as a compost pit and not have aheap? Does that make sense? can i do that?
??????
anybody?
Help?

Hello there, apparently stingy nettles in a hessian sack in the water barrell give the water a good iron content, to water fruit or tomatoes.

Any one heard this?
